The Chaotic Kingdom - Chapter 1

(Aluria Castle, Aluria; Resurrection Year 32)

The room was so cold that it felt like an iceberg floating on a frozen sea, yet, the chill had nothing to do with temperature. The woman walking through it could not see her breath, and she was actually sweating in the heat. The cold she felt was inside her soul and not her skin. She pulled her cloak tighter around her shoulders as she crossed to the crystal coffin sitting at the other end of the room. Perhaps her sister's Sight had been wrong for once. It had never happened before, but there was a first time for everything. There was no danger here and nothing had changed from the last time she had visited.

The coffin reached little over seven feet in length, and sleeping within its crystal body was a man. She had known him all of her life, yet they had not spoken in five years, six months, and three days. Every second had engraved itself into her soul where he had been torn away from her. He lived, but he was beyond her reach.

Only a friend's emergency healing had saved him, and even now he wasn't entirely recovered. The coffin could only prolong his life while he healed slowly. It could not work miracles. Tears slid down her cheeks as she pressed her hands against the face of the coffin. "I'm sorry," she whispered softly. "I did not mean for this to happen to you. If only I had been there, maybe I could have done something."

There was no answer, but she had not expected one. There were no more miracles to be had for her. She heard a sound behind her and turned her head to see her two sisters waiting for her at the base of the stairs. Both of them watched sadly. Rubbing her eyes briskly, the woman took a deep breath and crossed the room to join them. There was no time for regrets, no time to worry. There was a war to fight.

As the three left the room, only the pink haired one looked back to see a long jagged crack running along the face of the coffin. She smiled. They weren't out of miracles, not yet.

An encampment not far away prepared to make war against the castle. It wouldn't be easy to do for every possible entrance to the kingdom was tightly guarded, and the kingdom's defenses itself would be difficult to breach as well. Their only hope, the encroaching king thought to himself, was to take out the queen and her two sisters. A feat easier said than done, he acknowledged wryly.

Though only the queen was an Activated Ruler Cultivator, and her two sisters were Deactivated, none of them could be discounted for they were all Defender Cultivators as well. They had been made part of Aluria's chosen Cultivators, and the Seeds inside their souls gave them immense magic. The queen held the Illusion Flower Element and her skills crossed both Ruler and Defender, and she held offensively oriented magic on the latter. The middle sister held the Time Flower Element and she had defensively oriented magic as a Defender Cultivator. The youngest sister had the Nature Flower Element, and defensive magic as well, but she also possessed incredible skill with a sword that meant she nearly did not need her magic at all. The three together made a formidable set without adding in the seven other Defender Cultivators of Aluria who crossed the seven other common Flower Elements of existence and had vowed to protect their queen and princesses with their lives. Already during this war, one had done exactly that. The Defender possessing the Glass Flower Element had fallen in the first wave. The invading king could not call it a victory, though. Not when her own daughter had immediately Activated as a Defender in her place. A child she may be, but no one who wore a Mask could be discounted.

Still, an advantage lay on the enemy side. The king glanced to where soldiers prepared a catapult. He had reached for magic he did not have naturally, and now he would use it brutally as he liked. Magically enhanced attacks would pierce the defense just enough to get his soldiers in before the kingdom's army of knights or Defenders could stop him.

He gestured for his brother to join him, and they walked across the field to where he would give his speech to the soldiers. They made dissimilar brothers, despite sharing fair hair and appealing features. Such a discrepancy in their personalities existed that most did not think they were related at all.

The king had a handsome face but his narrowed, cruel, blue eyes could not be disguised. His brother had features more beautiful than handsome, but his blue eyes always looked slightly vacant and deeply mad. The moments of sharp intelligence amid the madness only made him more terrifying.

He wore the oddest hat on his head at all times. A stocking cap, like a court minstrel may wear. It looked very out of place with his soldier's uniform, but it was his prized possession and almost his most identifying feature. Most called him merely 'Minstrel' though his name by birth had been Durante. He bore a third name as well, though no one ever spoke it to his face.

Five years before, Minstrel and his rival had engaged in a fierce battle that had ended with Minstrel mortally wounding his enemy. He had not walked away himself, however, as the middle sister of the kingdom had struck him down with her blade. He bore a scar across his back from the ordeal and had no idea what had happened to his rival. To that day, people still whispered about the Raven and Dove locking blades.

But only in whispers, for the dark-haired Raven was the bringer of peace, and the Dove the bringer of war.

(Delphinium Palace, Delphinium)

The entirety of the Blossom Field galaxy and beyond buzzed happily with excitement and energy. Another royal wedding was about to happen! This marriage belonged to the kingdom of Aster from the world of the same, and would unite Crown Prince Theodore Mallory with his fiancĂ©e, Kimber Richards. They had been betrothed for many years, and now they would finally permanently seal their lives together, and someday very soon, they would become the Lower King and Queen of Aster. A fitting role when Theo happened to be the Dual Cultivator—both Ruler and Defender—of Aster for the first generation of the Resurrection Era.

It was early October of RN Year 32. It had been over a year since the last war against evil had ended, and no one took the peace for granted. The groom, in particular, felt happy with the quiet of the galaxy. He quite looked forward to a long honeymoon where he and Kimber could be entirely alone.

Bubbling with happiness, he twirled in front of the mirror and watched his wedding clothes shimmer against his fair skin. It was a far more elaborate version of his Ruler suit as a Cultivator, and it had been made of brocades and silks and the agate stones of his world. His own adopted mother as well as one of his best friends had made it for him, and he loved how it looked. He had more than a little bit of an addiction to style and looking good, but he didn't see that so bad a thing. A coronet of orange asters and agates sat atop his coiled and curled cardinal red hair, and he had a matching bouquet waiting. Tradition said that whoever walked down the aisle—which was always the highest ranking half of the couple—would carry a bouquet to be tossed out at the single folks to see who may get married next. He already knew who would catch his.

Crown Rulers getting married could select a personal attendant and three companions to accompany them down the aisle as well as help them get ready before. Theo had picked Bethany Jackson as his attendant, and Storm Peacer, Raine Fujisawa, and Reagan Delphinium as his companions. The dressing room had been filled as much with laughing as it had work. The four had been friends for what felt like a lifetime—and almost had for some of them.

"Who is babysitting the tiny terrors?" he asked as he let Beth fuss a bit more over his hair. "It would normally be Tasia, but she's kinda busy marrying me off."

"And enjoying it wholly," Reagan giggled. "The terrors are being babysat by Olivia. She has the best time of it, really."

The tiny terrors were few in number but many in quirks and power. Anna Aria was eight years old and a rather powerful witch already; Relisha and Percival Statice were both five, with Relisha being a Ruler Cultivator and both sharing some special skills as well as majik; Devin Daffodil was also five, and though not a Cultivator, had some as-yet undefined power as well as too much charm and sass; and the youngest was Daelan Aria, Anna's little brother, who had turned a year old in June of that year and already showed great majikal promise. Anastasia Aria—Tasia to her friends—was Anna and Daelan's mother as well as the Lead Defender of her generation, a sorceress, and the High Priestess of the Protea Kingdom, so she by far had the best luck at taming the horde of sass and energy. Olivia Martine, however, was Tasia's mother and therefore a fair hand herself at handling powerful troublemakers. She had raised not just Tasia, but also Storm and Raine since their widower father was her dearest friend; he had helped raised Tasia in turn.

There came a light knock on the door, and Storm went to peek around the edge to see who was there. He pulled his head back in and said blandly, "Help me think of excuses to get Kari into a ball gown more often, please. I mean, seriously. Beth, can I make a request for her future wedding dress?"

Amid the laughter from even Kari, Beth walked over and peeked around Storm's shoulder at the woman in the hall. Kari's fair skin, rust hair, and auburn eyes had been well-complimented by someone putting her into blue tones. "Wow, you're right, Storm. She really wears that well! Aunt Ashe and I are totally taking requests."

Kari Anohue did not bat a lash for she had well gotten used to her lover's friends; they happened to be hers as well, really. There was nothing sacred in the circle of Resurrection Cultivators and their soul mate Caretakers alike, and no one would have it any other way. "Thanks, I think. I'm just a messenger to let you know that we're about ready to go." She heard a step and looked over to see Asheria and Jayden Aster approaching. "Make it quick," she warned them. "Tasia said five to places."

"Thank you five," Theo told her on a grin.

"Theatrical junkie," Reagan teased.

The current Lower Queen and King of the Aster Kingdom stepped into the room and then stopped short as they saw their son. He was theirs only by adoption, but he was still no less theirs. "Oh," Asheria breathed. "Oh, Theodore! You look so wonderful! Damn it!" She snatched her husband's handkerchief to wipe her eyes. "No crying! I told myself I wouldn't cry!"

Theo smiled and stepped closer to hug her tight. He had been given two wonderful mothers in his life, and he was honored by the gift. He loved Asheria and Jayden no less than his birth parents. "I'm so glad I found you both." He looked at Jayden with a tremulous smile. "You've been a wonderful dad."

"Don't do that," he complained. "You'll make me cry too." He stepped over and hugged them both tightly and he knew he held his entire world right there.

"Places!" Kari called through the door.

Asheria and Jayden left the room again and went to the space where the ceremony was being held. They joined Maria Mallory on the right side of the room where the family of the groom was to stand, and the three parents shared a smile. "Thank you," Asheria told her softly, "for sharing him with us. Did you see him?"

"Earlier when he was first getting ready. Reagan shooed me out because I kept crying!" She swiped at her eyes and smiled as her other, elder, son joined them. "You're next."

Terrence Mallory grinned at her. He and Theo showed clear resemblance in their identical coloring, but could not actually pass for twins, much to their relief. "No, I'm not. Beth and I are only betrothed right now, and there's someone else around here that is long overdue to take a trip down the aisle to wedded bliss."

The three parents exchanged a look of lifted brows. That sounded like the Resurrection generation, both Cultivator and Caretaker alike, planned something rather specific. Jayden thought about what he knew and suspected, and suddenly snorted softly as he realized where things may he headed. "Oh, gods. This will be good."

The music started up, and the procession began. The attendant led the groom while the other three flanked him. They escorted him down the aisle to where a visibly dazed Kimber stood, looking equally beautiful in her gown as a future Aster princess by marriage, and they passed him into her care. The couple then turned and walked the rest of the way to the altar where the High Priestess of Protea waited to marry them. The sacred duty of marrying off the princes and princesses of the Lower worlds in Blossom Field lay only in her hands—and since she happened to be one of them herself, from Iris, she took particular humor and enjoyment in such a thing.

Caramel eyes sparkling, Tasia Aria began, "Once upon a time, not so long ago . . ."

(Aluria)

The catapult had worked. Soldiers had gotten over the walls before the army of knights could do anything, and now they had a chance of being able to breach the castle itself. The Alurian Defenders had scattered across the world to protect other very critical locations, and Starlight knew it came down to her and her sisters to handle everything.

Sunlight was sharpening her blade, and Moonlight was polishing the scapolite gem on the end of her magic rod. They both looked at their sister as she took up her sword and both fell into step beside her as she went down the stairs. It was their kingdom, damn it. No one could take it away from them!

"I'll take Cashlin on solo," Starlight decided grimly.

"Whoa, back up there. Let me do it," Sunlight protested. "You're not as good as I am."

"It's my duty," Starlight argued. "I am the queen of Aluria, and one of her Defenders as much as you. I need to do this."

"Screw that!" Moonlight said in annoyance. "The last thing we need is a repeat of Raven! At least let us go along and cover your back!"

Starlight hesitated and then nodded slowly. "Alright." All three pulled on their Masks to call their armor as Defenders, and then she threw open the doors of the castle and let the three of them run out into the streaked sunset that promised to turn everything to red.

Blood would spill, and not all of it would be the enemy. Sunlight did not need her Sight to know it.

(Delphinium)

The reception acted more like a party than anything else, and everyone laughed and danced and had a wonderful time. Dane Iris, the Lower King of the world of the same, kept the music going and occasionally managed to coax his daughter into singing along. Tasia had the most beautiful voice in the entire universe, and it was also the most powerful for she was a Mystic. Lovers were forced to sway together when her drugging contralto voice sang of immortal love.

High Princess LeAnn Protea bided her time until the Mystic sang a particularly romantic tune before slowly making her way across the room to where the Captain of the Royal Knights for Protea had hidden himself in a corner. It had been more than a year since she had confirmed him to be her soul mate and future Caretaker, and as she had suspected, her age of twenty-seven—reached just days before—had begun to make people lift their brows in wondering why she had not paid much attention to her suitor list. Two others of her generation, Emily Hyacinth and Ryan Orchid, had begun to get the same look. More, perhaps, since Emily would turn thirty-one at the end of the month and Ryan would be thirty in December. But they, like LeAnn, had no need for a suitor list. They already knew who they wanted. While the dissimilar siblings waited for their soul mates to return, LeAnn instead moved toward claiming her own. She had never wanted anything more than she wanted Captain Rubeo Chance. And she would have him one way or another. If she had to pull out the big guns and seduce him into being forced to marry her, so be it. He was her soul mate, and it was about damned time he realized it.

Chance sensed her long before she got close. His head lifted quickly and his eyes found her where she crossed the room toward him. The look in her eyes made him instantly wary. He knew that look. It was the look she got when she was after something and didn't give a damn for the consequences. It had been amusing in a child and slightly vexing in a teenager. It felt downright terrifying inside a grown woman capable of finding any way to get what she wanted.

She made no effort to shine in the room, and yet she was effortlessly one of the most beautiful women present. Her Ruler gown of course resembled the black protea of her world, and the petals clung to every lush curve of her body while seductively revealing the powerful muscles in her arms. Normally her equally strong legs could have been seen under the lower petals of the skirt, but a full black hoop skirt had been added underneath to make the dress more formal for the occasion. A single black pendant rested on top of her bodice, guaranteed to draw eyes that direction, and matching earrings dripped to her shoulders.

Her protea pink eyes had been enhanced by pale green eyeshadow, and her thick black hair fell to her waist in loose waves with white streaks striated across the surface. One did not need to look at her gown or the coronet of proteas and amber atop her head to know she was a High Princess. She walked, breathed, and embodied grace and power. She was breathtaking. Beautiful. Enticing. Desirable. And one hundred percent off limits.

Damn her.

She stopped in front of him and linked her hands behind her back. Her dress tugged across her chest, revealing that the highest petals climbing to her neck were not completely opaque and that the Flower Mark over her heart as well as the top curves of her breasts could be seen from close enough. He told himself he did not feel tempted by the sight at all.

He lied.

An innocent smile touched her kissable lips, and her luminous eyes looked guileless as she leaned back just a bit to see his face better. He stood only four inches taller than her five-ten height. "Hello, Chance."

It was the bane of his existence that her voice had changed slightly over the years. It had started from the moment she and her twin soul mate had met and bonded. Her twin's Mystic soul always overlapped her own and one could not be in constant contact with a Mystic and not gain musical gifts of their own. Tasia's soul-brother, Logan Fujisawa, had been born relative normal but over thirty years had become a Virtuoso. Her soul mate and husband, Rodi Aria, had been born a Shaman but evolved within a few short years to Virtuoso. LeAnn had also been born relatively normal, but the last few years had evolved her to a Shaman herself. The shift to her power to give it a musical application had resulted in changing her naturally lovely voice to something unforgettably beautiful.

Every time she talked to Chance, that beautiful voice sounded richer, breathier, and entirely seductive. He tried to convince himself everyone heard her voice that way, but he lacked the nerve to ask. "Hello."

The innocent smile curved at the end knowingly. "I'm surprised you're even here. I thought you were allergic to crowds."

"Your mother twisted my arm. The entirety of the two kingdoms are required to be present for a royal wedding, and that includes me as Captain of the Royal Knights. Artois of Delphinium's Royal Knights is here as well." He kept his voice calm and without emotion by sheer willpower. She was wearing perfume. It smelled like majik and mystery and lush nature. The urge to find where she had applied it was consuming and hard to fight. "What do you want?"

"A dance." She grinned when his brows lifted. "You heard me. I want a dance with you."

"You haven't been dancing at all." As soon as he said it, he cursed himself. He didn't want her to know he had been watching her.

She ignored the slip up though it delighted her. "I was saving myself for you." She held up her wrist where a small card dangled. The names of her few suitors were written on it. She had been deflecting dozens since her twentieth birthday, and only five had made the cut. Unknown to Chance, she had only accepted those five at all as a cover. "I decided that I would not dance with any of these people until I danced with someone I actually care about." She took his hand and began pulling him out onto the dance floor.

She stopped them in the very middle, and he felt brows lifting across the room as people stared at him on the floor. "LeAnn," he started, only to stop as she stepped forward into his arms. Her hands slid up to link behind his neck without any effort. She fit perfectly in his arms as if their bodies had been made to become one. He found his hands settling on her waist without his will, and his fingers felt burned by the heat of her body. She smoldered like the sun that powered her Nature Flower Element. Even then, in the sunlight coming through the glass ceiling of the grand ballroom, she literally exuded more sunlight from her body as a soft glow around her.

"Just one dance," she coaxed softly, her voice an intimacy that swept across his body and soul. Her lashes lowered slightly, and she kept her triumphant smile hidden as he stepped forward and smoothly guided her into the dance. He carried the romantic three-note dance perfectly, of course. He had always deigned any skill, but she knew otherwise. One of her gifts as a Shaman was to pinpoint musical talent, vocal or physical, in others. Though it had taken seven years for her gift to come in wholly, it had been worth the wait. It was another weapon to be used in this most important battle.

He did not know what was inside her mind, nor did he realize they made a spectacle for everyone else. The graceful and beautiful High Princess of Protea, and the handsome, but quiet, Captain of the Royal Knights. Chance may have been surprised to discover he carried a lot of respect, and happened to be quite liked despite his distance from people. Whispers started to flow, but all of them were as delighted as they were surprised as people began to wonder.

He had not noticed the whispers at all. A blend of a mystical voice and his princess' presence had taken him away. His eyes riveted to her face, and he desperately struggled to ignore how she felt in his arms. That damned pendant was a lodestone that constantly drew his gaze to her tempting body. He had given it to her in the past because he had seen it and thought she would like it. She never took it off now, and seeing it always around her neck made his heart ache painfully.

The ache was unfamiliar and frightening, and it became alarm as she suddenly shot a flirty look up at him from under her lashes. A very distinctly flirty look that could not be misinterpreted, even by him. "I think you might want to explain," he said as mildly as he could.

She didn't pretend to misunderstand. "I decided it was time to make my intentions plain." She smiled as he twirled her expertly and then, when she went back into his arms, she stepped closer than before. "You're a smart man, Rubeo Chance. I imagine you can guess what's going on."

He stopped dancing and lifted his hands sharply. He was in much deeper water than he had realized; he had started sinking before he had known he needed to tread. "LeAnn," he said swiftly, "you're looking for trouble."

"Oh, I'm not looking for trouble." She smiled. "I'm looking for a husband." She curtsied deeply and elegantly, and her royal upbringing was so vividly obvious that even a fool could notice. He wasn't a fool, and he felt incredibly large and clumsy next to her. "I waited for you for three years to notice me," she told him, "but that has not happened. Therefore I will simply have to take matters into my own hands." She calmly removed the card around her wrist and dropped it on the floor. "As by right of my royal blood, I remove myself from eligibility in order to pursue the one I want." She turned away with her hands linked behind her back and then looked back over her shoulder to purr, "And the one I want is you." Without another word, she walked across the floor toward where Lower Queen Veronica Carnation and her husband, Maxim, stood talking with Kami Jackson, Beth's birth mother.

Shock held Chance immobile for a moment and then he cursed violently and stalked off the floor. People cleared his path quickly but he barely noticed. All those who watched him go began to smile to themselves. LeAnn's parents were also watching from across the room, and Shanae and Robert exchanged a smug look. "Let the games begin," the High Queen murmured in satisfaction. She leaned over to a Royal Knight nearby and said, "Would you tell the Captain that he better get his ass back in this ballroom? He knows he's not allowed to leave until the married couple departs. And, yes, quote me." She smirked a bit as the snickering Knight hurried off.

Her action played right into the other plans already in motion. Theo had already had quite a discussion with Crown Princess Racine Statice as well as Storm before the wedding even began. Both Dual Cultivators possessed the skill of Telekinesis which meant they did not need to touch something to move it; they could move it with their mind. Both had come onboard with the plan immediately. After all, the eight Dual Cultivators of the Lower worlds considered it a sacred duty to help their High Princesses get what they wanted.

Theo climbed up onto a chair to give him better aim with his bouquet and watched with a tiny smile as most of the single people gathered. Even Emily and Ryan joined the ground with LeAnn—but only as a cover. Several people eyed LeAnn with clear hope as they waited to make a grab for the flowers, and Chance, once more leaning against a wall not far away, nearly bared his teeth at the idiots clamoring for his princess' attention.

"Alright, everyone!" Theo turned his back and hoped his friends and wife moved fast. He didn't want to be sporting bruises and broken bones on his honeymoon. He started to lob the bouquet over his shoulder, but the chair suddenly toppled and sent him flying. The bouquet went heavily off course, and he gave a shout as Allister Statice, Rodi Aria, and Kimber shot forward to catch him safely. All four looked at each other and then slowly looked to where the bouquet had landed.

As everyone followed their gaze, the entire room began to laugh. Chance stared at the flowers in his hands and then narrowed a fierce glare at Storm. He simply arched a brow back, as if to dare Chance to accuse him of anything. Chance looked at LeAnn instead, and she sent him a distinctly saucy wink. At his wit's end, he turned on his heel and left the room entirely before he got in even more trouble.

Tasia stepped over to LeAnn and held out a hand that her twin soul slapped lightly with her own. "Stage one, complete," she said in satisfaction.

The Destined Kingdom - Bonus Content - Tasia's Sorceress Awakening Song

<-Bonus Content - Glossary

Music is integral to the KINGDOMS Series, and in some ways to me personally—but that is another long story. When working on the series, a lot of times I used placeholder songs until I could come up with my own lyrics, and that did generally work. Until it came time for THE DESTINED KINGDOM and the song Tasia sang to shatter her own soul and awaken as a sorceress. At that point, stumped, I turned to the only person I knew who could help, Kylie Jude of Frozen Creek Studios. Kylie and I have worked together before (she made the theme for the 3rd DISTRICT Series) and she has a way of reading between the lines of what I give her, and giving me back perfection.

And so it happened again when she sent me Light In The Dark, where she had accidentally packed so much more symbolism than she realized, including foreshadowing to future events to come. Now here, posted for the first time, is the lyric video she created for the song, and the song in its entirety. You can go back to the chapter and listen to the song while reading the scene, and it will have so much more depth.

Some of the foreshadow of this song is even coming in THE CHAOTIC KINGDOM which is right around the corner . . . I wonder what it will be . . .

The Eternal Kingdom - Bonus Content - Defender Masks

<-Epilogue

As promised, this week we are focusing on something critical to the KINGDOMS Series: the Masks worn by Defender Cultivators!

When I first was working on KINGDOMS and bringing it into my own world as its own magical story, I kept thinking about the idea of identities as well as protection, and masks seemed an incredibly logical junction between the two. Masks feature prominently in a lot of magical anime, as well as stories at large, but I wanted to take it to something simultaneously physical and yet magical. Here's how I describe the Masks right from the official glossary (which in its entirety will be released after the final book):

The item used by a Defender to summon their armor. A Mask is a condensation and manifestation of the Flower Element magic of each world, and donning it will both shield a Defender's identity as well as give them magical armor for protection. A Defender does not need to wear their Mask in order to access their magic or weapon, but it is usually safer to put on a Mask before pissing off evil things. All Defenders of a world have the same Mask, and armor is identical on males as well as identical on females (which is determined by the Defender's identity).

The Masks, being magical, don't have to be completely practical, which allowed complete freedom of creation for their design. And for their designs, I turned to one of the most amazing mask artists I've ever met, Sabrina from Sapphire Masquerade. I provided her with the trademarks of each world (colors, flower, meaning, stones, etc) and told her 'have fun.' Boy did she, and she did her absolute best to find the flowers that I actually used, with some "close cousins" standing in for those she could not exactly match. And here they are, all of the Defender Masks!

Ranunculus and Carnation:

Similar in style, as a reminder that Defenders can be alike across universes as well as galaxies.

Statice and Daffodil:

What can I say, I love both of these for different reasons. The simplicity of Statice seems to perfectly balance for how amusingly complex the world seems to be compared to the rest.

Delphinium and Protea:

I thought that Sabrina was incredibly clever with the Protea design, because try as she might, she could not find any flower that looked enough like a protea—but she did find leaves!

Iris and Orchid:

Fun fact, Sabrina is uncannily intuitive. Look at the Iris Mask. Notice something? Something like music notes? I had not told her at all about the tendency of music to be connected to Iris, and yet there she used a bit of sheet music. Now that is Destiny.

Gladiolus, Hyacinth, Aster:

I absolutely love the fan on Gladiolus, and it is exactly the sort of "not practical but that's okay because magic" I mentioned before.

Hmm . . . that's all of the Defenders we've met in the story so far, so I wonder what Mask this is and what world it belongs to . . . . you'll have to come back in THE CHAOTIC KINGDOM and find out!

Blog Plans for December and Annoucement for 2024!

Hello!

Thank you all for following the journey through the KINGDOMS Series thus far. Just last week the epilogue of THE ETERNAL KINGDOM was posted, and thus the end of Book 4. While THE CHAOTIC KINGDOM won't start posting until the new year, we have two bonus posts going up in the coming weeks.

For those that pay attention to the Table of Contents for each book, you'll know that THE ETERNAL KINGDOM will have the Defender masks, while THE DESTINED KINGDOM will have the song Tasia sang as she awakened into a Sorceress. More information about each will be presented when the bonus content is posted! For those that want an updated Glossary, since there have been new terms added since the first Glossary in THE DESTINED KINGDOM, you will have wait until the end of THE FINAL KINGDOM to receive it. There are plenty of more terms that will pop up in THE CHAOTIC KINGDOM and THE FINAL KINGDOM, and it is easier, and less spoilery, to post it after the final book.

While I still don't have the covers for THE DESTINED KINGDOM, THE ETERNAL KINGDOM, THE CHAOTIC KINGDOM, and THE FINAL KINGDOM, I am planning to run a Kickstarter around the time of THE FINAL KINGDOM. This is mainly to fund a physical print run of the books, but also to hopefully finally get the remaining covers commissioned!

One final thing for the week: starting in 2024, another of my book series will start being posted to the blog. When a video game series both myself and my mother loved released a third game, we both hated it. I then decided that I could write it better, so I did. Now it has become its own thing that has snowballed into five books. And a bunch of side stories. That would be the THREADS Series.

However, you will not have to wait until the KINGDOMS Series is completed before you get the start of the THREADS series. While I haven't fully decided when the first book of the THREADS series will start posting, I know that it will be posted on a different day of the week. Probably on Tuesdays or Thursdays, because I like alliteration.

In the meantime, here is the new cover for the first book to the THREADS Series. This brand new cover has been redesigned from the original print run to better reflect the direction of the series, and were painted--yes painted!--by the incomparable Dawn Star Wood. All five covers will be revealed in time, and should soon be reflected in their printed versions published by Line by Lion Publications.

The Eternal Kingdom - Epilogue

<-Chapter 20

(Delphinium; Resurrection Era Year 31)

Time passed. The Resurrection Cultivators returned in February of RE Year 31, and their relevant parents and family members went to sleep that very night and woke the next morning with the new memories of the events of the Rebirth Era inside their minds. It soon felt as if they had always known about it, which was not an uncommon effect. And also rather convenient, as the Commanders and Chance alike could now remember how to store and call up their uniforms the same way they did weapons. To hedge the odds more, Tasia added more protective charms to all of them.

If there lay any humor in the events, it was the Elder Cultivators suddenly remembering Tasia was pregnant and had brought home a daughter. She had not mentioned the former or brought Anna to the castle upon arriving home just so that the memories from the Lag Delay could catch up; it would be better for Anna herself because she had already bonded with her greats and grands alike, and having to re-introduce herself might be odd.

So, when Tasia walked into the Delphinium Castle with Anna, she murmured, "Count back from five."

Anna did, and she made it to exactly one before Sayena and Yvette came zipping into the grand entry hall. She muffled giggles as Yvette scooped her up off the ground. "Grandma!" She happily hugged Yvette around the neck. She really liked how her mom and grandmom alike smelled like irises. She then held her arms out to Sayena to be cuddled as well. "Aunt Sio—Sayena," she corrected herself.

Sayena grinned. "You'll get used to it, honey. Ooh!" She snuggled Anna more and then put her down. "March!" she ordered Tasia, pointing to the hall that led to the nearby medical room.

Tasia rolled her eyes but marched. "You'd think I hadn't been under your care already, or Aunt Kacey's. Or my own sister." She did not complain as Sayena put her through a full physical however, as medical science had advanced some in the last five thousand years and it would make everyone feel better to be reassured she and her son were mutually healthy after that summoning event.

"How did Olivia and Tosh like being sudden grandparents?" Yvette asked as she leaned in the doorway with a grin.

"You're going to have competition for spoiling Anna, just a warning. And I've never seen Tosh blubber up quite so fast as having Storm return home with a Caretaker and then discovering his eldest is both pregnant and brought a six-year-old daughter home. Anna called him 'grandpa' and made him bawl. It was adorable."

"You did that on purpose," Sayena lightly scolded Anna on a smile.

Anna beamed. "Aunt Raine told me to!" She gave a little yelp of surprise as she was scooped up and then turned her head to see Asheria holding her. "Hi, Aunt Ashe."

Asheria grinned. "I've wrangled your Aunt Beth. We're going to make you your official gown as an Iris princess!" She headed back out with Anna in her arms. "Maybe throw in some aspects of Aria, considering your parents. It's fitting."

And so, life settled back into a normal rhythm. Those who had been attending university finally graduated—on time, thanks to hard work—and Anna enrolled in private tutoring rather than a public school, since she shortly proved again to be her mother's daughter by learning too fast for a regular environment.

In June of RE 31, Tasia gave birth to a baby boy that was immediately doted upon by everyone within sight or hearing. He had his father's black hair, his mother's caramel eyes, and a terrifying blend of their striking beauty. The Flower Mark of an Activated Ruler Cultivator of Iris had been etched over his heart, renewing the proof and hope of the rebooted lineages. He had also been born with a powerful dose of majik—as expected—and it already appeared to sway to the Conjuring side dominant in his father. Many times in the first few months of his life, someone would go to his crib and find he had created something out of thin air. Mostly inanimate objects, thankfully, though one or two new pets joined the grounds of the Delphinium and Protea Palaces alike.

With a marriage looming next year of Theo and Kimber, eyes began to study the rest of their generation curiously. Things were still on schedule for the rest of the worlds to be repopulated and the kingdoms reborn by the latter half of RN Year 33. On the surface, it still appeared as if Reagan, Emily, Ryan, and LeAnn had not found their soul mates. None could take their thrones without being at least engaged, and none of their generation wanted to be on those thrones without all of their friends by their side. It had been assumed that the kingdoms would rise with the crowning of the new generation, but now people began to wonder.

Unknown to most, however, was that that plan still sat firmly on track. Not only did Emily and Ryan expect to again meet their Caretakers after a little longer had passed, but LeAnn had a plan. She had formulated her attack and now just bided her time like a hunter waiting for prey. The day of Theo's wedding, she would make her first motion. After all, that would be about the time for people to wonder why LeAnn had not given much attention to any of her suitors when time had begun running out on her. Enough time that, really, her parents should have been at the point of forcing her hand, but since both knew very well what was going on, she had no concerns there. Everyone who knew what lay ahead could only grin to themselves in anticipation.

Reagan had no plans, other than desperately trying to exercise patience. She had accepted only one or two new suitors since she had figured out she knew her soul mate, and since coming back from Rebirth, she had accepted none at all. She honestly wanted nothing more than to throw her list out the window and yell at people that she knew who she wanted, but she really couldn't do that. She had asked, and her mother had said no. Darn it.

As October came again, a year after the incident that had led to the Paradoxal Pivot, she walked through the gardens of her beloved Delphinium Castle and tried to remind herself it had only been about eight months since coming home. It just felt like eight hundred years. She knew her father and aunt and best friend had been to the Immortal Fields many times over the last few months, but no one would tell her anything. She had expected it to be complicated, but not this complicated!

She felt a sudden presence behind her and whirled around in surprise. Her knees immediately went weak as she saw a familiar green-haired man walking toward her. She felt her head swim but refused to faint again. She wanted to see him! She gathered the skirts of her Ruler gown and rushed toward him on a cry of joy. She tripped, of course, but Pallas had expected it this time and he caught her up to swing her in a giddy circle. "Rea." He held her closer. "I missed you!"

"I missed you!" She clung onto him tighter. "Tell me I don't have to let go."

"You don't. Not really." He eased her back and smiled a little tremulously. "While I cannot spend every hour with you, and most of my time must be in the Fields, I can be with you, and marry you. It has been determined we will do a trial run where I watch over the Fields from afar for part of the day, but must remain there for the rest. To see if I can serve as Archon the way Claret is Librarian and Allister is Knight. My job is different from theirs, so we must take things slowly."

Her smile lit her face and made her eyes glow like liquid gold. "As long as I have you when I need you, I can be happy." She framed his beloved face in her hands. "Am I allowed to visit you there? In person. Not just projection."

"You are! You may spend as much time with me there as you like so long as you are not High Queen and have other duties. Edgar intends to place another connection point in this very garden so you can easily come to me anytime you like. Your wand can bring you to me from anywhere else." He smiled. "Shanae has promised we will know exactly how things will end by the time you are ready to be crowned. The only condition that will be hard for us to handle . . . is that I cannot enter battles at your side as Caretaker. I must wait for you to return so I may Care for you then. Only in the case of extreme danger to you only I can prevent is that lifted."

She took a long breath. "Okay. That's hard. But I guess me being the squishy magical type who stays back makes it a little easier. I have Raine, too. I will accept anything as long as I can be with you in any way, Pallas."

"Then . . . shall I go put my name on your suitor list?"

She giggled. "Why bother? I just want to throw that darn thing away! I don't need it. Let's skip right to being betrothed. Aunt Shanae said that was acceptable. Just show up at a family gathering dragging our soul mate along." She looked up at him from under her lashes, deliberately teasing and coy and sultry. "Are you . . . free right now? I mean, we do have a few hours until this week's gathering. Eep!" She hastily grabbed his shoulders as he swept her off her feet. Her heart beat wild and fast with a combination of lust and love and humor. "You can't carry me inside to my room. You wouldn't dare."

"My beloved, I would dare anything." He walked calmly toward the glittering castle. "You will of course have to tell me which way to go, though. It might ruin the mood if I got us lost."

Giggles welled up against her control as she saw servants spot them and start clapping. "We're going to have so much fun together, Pallas. You will never ever be alone again." She gave him a smacking kiss, and heard cheers. "Thank you, my Archon," she whispered, "for making my dream come true."

He held her tighter for a moment as he paused and then kept walking. "You're welcome," he said softly. "Now which way am I going?"

She pointed the way, giggling anew, and felt happiness welling up from the bottom of her soul. Maybe that was the true power inside a Life Orb. The power to accept your past and change your future through it. If you could find the strength to accept even your most painful memories, then anything was possible.

Even making dreams come true.
